Heimdallr- I've had several people ask in the past and another one today about honoring Heimdallr. Most of these people follow Loki and are curious about Heimdallr. Here is just my mileage geared toward the typical Lokean:
Items- dark beers like doppelbocks, lamb (duh!), cumin, mexican or thai seasonings, grains, grainy breads, thick stews. He doesn't have much of a sweet tooth [which eliminates much of the 'but Loki got candy' stuff <grins>] but does suprisingly like coconut. I wouldn't go as sweet/rich as coconut pie but coconut ice cream topped with pineapple is a hit.
Acts- He values studiousness, industry, perseverance. Whatever you do plan to do it well and to the best of your ability. He does NOT accept slovenly work or excuses. Don't bother if you aren't going to give 110%.
Approach- It would be better to err on the side of formality than to go to Him in too jovial a manner. He does not tolerate anything He considers to be disrespect- you'll have to earn every privilege and leeway with sweat and tears. He has no patience for nonsense- go to Him prepared to work and listen. Cut the extra chat. That said, once you have proven yourself and stay within His expectations He is amazingly patient and gentle.
Heimdallr seems to actively work with far fewer people than Loki. I believe much of this has to do with His primary function as a guardian and one who facilitates crossings. To effectively perform those roles He tends to remain impartial. He is very gracious- if you do happen to make contact you will likely find Him to be initially extremely courteous.
In a nutshell- be polite and respectful. Don't plan on negotiating as one can with Loki, especially at first. Don't plan on humor and playing cute; this tact will absolutely not work with Him and, if anything, may cause Him to just walk away.
All that said, Heimdallr is well worth attempting to engage. If He chooses to cast an eye on you He brings with Him his own wonders and blessings. He is quite funny in a dry, Peter Sellers kind of way. If you'll note, even in the lore Loki doesn't really tell jokes, He tricks. It is Heimdallr however, who with a slight smirk that disappeared in an instant, convinced both Thor and Loki to get into dresses. So settle in, sweat a little, shut up and listen. You'll be in for an amazing ride.

* What I find so fascinating about the spindle whorl above is that about six weeks prior to my finding the Saltfleetby spindle whorl Heimdallr mentioned one to me. Read about it here on the Rhythm of the Spindle.
