The Positives of Loki- a Lokean Baker's Dozen
Being fairly new to the Northern Gods I was a bit unprepared when I went bouncing into list serves full of Loki Love. If you haven't yet, you will eventually find there is a fair amount of intolerance for our Lord of Laughter. So- just to help even the score, here are some reminders that even when people are running and screaming in terror, the cat's stuck in the fridge, the turkey is on fire, and Loki is standing in the middle of it all grinning, He brings many positives to the world.
1. He's funny.
2. As all good Trickster Gods, Loki will poke holes in the rigid order of things making you think. If you aren't ready to have your world view turned upside down then don't approach Him. Personally, I think it is good for everyone to get a little construct shake now and then. It will keep you honest.
3. He's funny.
4. Loki despises self-deception. This could be why many fear/hate Him. If you meet Him with too many lies to self He will ruthlessly strip them away before listening to what you came to Him about. This is painful and if you don't wind your way through that maze of self-deceit you may just think He is cruel. He isn't- you just didn't get it. But, who better to point out your denial of faults/issues than a God?
5. The mythos outlines His many gifts to mankind and the Gods including the fishing net, Thor's Hammer, the symbolism of harvest via Sif's golden hair, Sleipner, and the ability to question. The mythos also clearly relates how He often saves the Aesir from troubles relating to Their own attempts to cheat others.
6. He's funny.
7. Freya Aswynn associates the rune Dagaz with Him. This rune catalyzes change but it does so cataclysmically, not gently as it's opposite Jera does. Dagaz literally means 'day', when the sun is at it's highest. She assigns it to the controlling power of Loki and to a limited extent, the power of Heimdallr. So, based on this one could say Loki is a changing force of light lending Himself to initiation and transcendance.
8. He's funny.
9. He can heal those who have had difficult childhoods and need to regain that sense of childlike abandon and wonder.
10. He is truly quite loving and protective to/of those who face Him honestly and openly. I have found Loki to be far more nurturing and supportive than how much of the literature out there tends to depict.
11. And, did I say He's funny? He is. Take a moment and get to know Him. You'll be laughing your arse off!
As you have likely guessed, Loki has spent alot of time making me laugh. His jokes are often quite intricate- He will tell the beginning one day, three weeks later He'll tell you the end, and another month later He'll tell you the middle and once you catch on you are rolling. If you don't you may just think He is crazy as the comments seem to come out of the blue.
But then, that is how Loki woo'd me. With laughter and play.
Cautionary note: Not everyone has the best experience with Loki. See number 4. Also, He does have a unique sense of humor and can be self serving. Make sure you are very clear in understanding what He is telling you. He will patiently repeat several times so do ask. He is a master negotiator and you may find yourself in a fix you didn't anticipate if you aren't clear. Virtually everything He says has some relevance and you could find yourself facing Him and He saying with a shrug, 'Don't come crying to me. I told you'. Sadly, you'll know He did tell you, you just didn't listen. Nothing that has happened to me of His will did He not tell me. I just didn't always register.
Of course He, as all the Gods, has the choice to like or not like a person. If you end up on the 'not like' list, well... sorry. I understand the like/not like list, there is a particular popular Goddess who doesn't care much for me. So be it.
